島唄 ー 悲劇の後の釜石市の為に、私の涙を届けて遅れ from Jono X on Vimeo.
This is in response to the Tohoku earthquake / tsunami in March. My town, Kamaishi, was hit very badly. My condolences to everyone who lost friends and family in this tragedy.
I wanted to express my sorrow somehow. This song is Shima-Uta ("Island Song"), by Okinawan band The Boom. It's one of the saddest songs I know.
This is, um, my first time trying to play and sing at the same time, so I'm not very good. Sorry.
I put it together with pictures from 2000-2003 when I lived in Kamaishi, and a few from when I went back to visit in 2009. I wanted to share my memories of Kamaishi as it was in a happier time.
The chorus goes roughly "Island song, ride the wind, with the birds, across the ocean. Island song, ride the wind, carry my tears and deliver them for me." which seemed appropriate. (There's also a lot of lyrics about storms and waves and saying farewell.)
